Spaghetti in Basil Peanut Pesto (Php 50), with grilled shrimps, eggplant, kalobay and tomatoes.

Peanut Curry (Php 50) with chicken, vegetables (squash, jackfruit, eggplant, okra) and brown rice.

Italian Wrap (Php 50) with shrimps, eggplant, tomatoes, homemade pesto and lettuce.

In this cafe, THE MOST EXPENSIVE DISH COSTS JUST 50 PESOS!
How could this be when all of the food at this cafe is organically grown?  Photographer Andreo Bongco explains this unique find in Negros Island, the Sweet Spot of the Philippines. Some of my favorite outtakes from a recent pro-bono shoot with Welcome Home Foundation's Natural Garden Cafe in Bacolod.

All of the food at this cafe is organically grown, prepared and cooked by the deaf-mute, but probably the best thing about this cafe is that THE MOST EXPENSIVE DISH COSTS JUST 50 PESOS. Weird right? Let me explain.

As I've mentioned before, one of my advocacies as a photographer is to provide pro-bono (free) imaging work to organizations which strive towards the common good. By taking pictures and writing about their efforts, it is my little way of helping them market what they believe in.

Natural Garden Cafe is one such organization I've come to help because it recruits, trains and employs the deaf-mute of Bacolod at their cafe. The deaf and mute are given dignified jobs with fair salaries and are trained excellently in HRM and the culinary arts.

Aside from this, the cafe takes on a farm to table approach in its dining. All the vegetables and meat are grown on the restaurant's grounds either in pesticide free vegetable beds, or in aquaponic fish tanks to raise awareness for a more natural diet free of GMOs and preservatives.

Now you may ask, why all of this for JUST 50 pesos? (Don't believe me yet? I posted the menu here just in case) The cafe prices their meals this low because their aim is not make a profit, rather it is to allow everyone (most especially low income workers) an alternative to cheap GMO and preservative laden food that people are so used to eating nowadays.

If you're interested in seeing what this bold yet well meaning cafe has to offer, drop by their alfresco cafe anywhere from 10AM to 5PM from Monday to Friday. (Better to go there during lunch because most of their food is sold out come 2PM).

They are located on the right side of the road entering Villa Valderrama Subdivision along Lacson Street going to the North of Bacolod past CountryMart.

I swear, you will not regret visiting it. Neither will your wallet, your tummy or your lymph nodes.

According to Wikipedia, the modern day Flash Mob happened in 2003 in Manhattan, NY.  This  1980 video somehow debunks that piece of information and points to a group doing it in Makati City, the financial capital of the Philippines.

So, if anyone gets to talk about flash mobs. Tell them it all started here in the Philippine islands

Dulaang UP’s second offering for its 40th Theatre Season is William Shakespeare’s King Lear and its new Filipino translation by Nicolas Pichay, Haring Lear. The play, considered by critics as Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, is directed by DUP Founding Artistic Director, Professor Emeritus Tony Mabesa.

The play is set in the waning years of a Southeast Asian kingdom replete with appropriate music, movement, costumes, and properties of the region without losing the themes, images, and poetry of the playwright’s supreme achievement. King Lear | Haring Lear is the epitome of how deceit and the love for the superficial can tragically bring families to ruin and great kingdoms to ashes.

The star-studded cast includes Joel Lamangan, Leo Rialp, Jojo Cayabyab, Jeremy Domingo, Jacques Borlaza, Guelan Luarca, Frances Makil-Ignacio, Gilleth Sandico, Martha Comia, and Astarte Abraham to name a few.

The artistic staff is composed of Ohm David (set design), Eric Pineda (costume design), Meliton Roxas (lighting design), Jethro Joaquin (sounds design), Arnel Paguyo (property design), Jeremy Dela Cruz (movement & choreography), Patrick Ortaliza and Juan Gonzales(dramaturgy) and John Mark Yap (assistant direction).

King Lear | Haring Lear runs from October 7 to October 25, 2015 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd Floor, Palma Hall, U.P. Diliman. For tickets, sponsorships, and show buying inquiries, call Samanta Hannah Clarin or Camille Guevara 926-1349, 433-7840, 981-8500 local 2449 or email dulaangupmarketing@gmail.com. Summer is over, and most Filipino parents are now going back to the grind of taking their kids through the school routines. The yuppies also feel the change in the atmosphere, as the vibe really is different when the summer months are over.

But what if you’re one of those who didn’t quite savor their summer vacations, but instead, chose to put in more hours at work, start new projects, and just generally stuck to being a workaholic? Is it too late for you to grab a weekend and enjoy the beach?

It’s never too late to make the most out of your vacation leave credits. And today is a good day to plan your weekend getaway.

Here are three reasons why July is a great time to start planning a trip to the beach:

  • Boracay is on “off-season” mode. Sure, a good number of people now say that Boracay is overrated and it just isn’t the same anymore. However, let’s face it: Boracay is still, by far, the most accessible and most convenience-filled beach in the Philippines. Accessible, transportation-wise, and convenience-filled, because all you need to do would be to book your flight, book your hotel, wait for your trip’s schedule, pack your things, and get there. The unspoiled beaches in the Philippines tend to be challenging to get to, and you may even need to bring your own tents, food, and other such provisions. If you want a fuss-free, discounted getaway just to clear your mind and see nothing but the sand and the blue sea for a change, Boracay is still the best go-to beach.
  • It’s a cooler time. This summer was probably the hottest in the Philippines, going up to 40 degrees Celsius in Metro Manila. If you’re like most of us spoiled urbanites, you wouldn’t want to trek through, say, D’Mall, with your things (most likely in a heavy backpack or a rather large trolley) to get to your hotel in the scorching sun. Now is the best time to go, and breaking a sweat (unavoidable in a tropical country, really) would be less of an ordeal than in the summer. And since it’s a cooler time, it’s time to plan trips throughout the year. You should totally start a travel “bucket list” of sorts. Boracay would be great to clear your head for a weekend; going to all the great spots in the Philippines at least once in your life will certainly make your toil worth it.
  • You totally should take quarterly trips. High performance guru Brendon Burchard says in his book The Charge that anyone who wants to keep themselves in top form for productivity should recharge regularly. In fact, he advises that you need to plan a getaway for yourself every 90 days, just to recharge, reset, and come back to work with a fresh drive to do awesome things. Now is a great time to start planning those vacations!

July is just around the corner, and you can’t afford to burn out with the grind. So don’t mind the fact that the rainy days are upon us. Plan your “summers,” get to your travel bucket list, because it’s simply more fun in the Philippines!

The Philippines is an archipelago bounded by

the Pacific Ocean to the east

the Bashi Channel to the north

the Sulu and the Celebes Seas to the south.

You can find us East of Vietnam, North of Indonesia.

The country is divided into the geographical areas of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Its capital, the City of Manila, is in Luzon. You can also enter through the cities of Cebu in the Visayas, and Davao in Mindanao.  Negros Island is its Sweet Spot, being the sugar bowl of the country with its vast sugarcane fields.

Welcome to our isles.

We are made up of 7,107 islands. Some have grown into cities. Some are the epitome of tropical dreams. Some are just long enough to lay down on and get a tan.

Big. Small. Sandy. Sunny. Relaxing. Exotic. Beautiful. Our little clutch of islands make for one long stretch of beach – more than 15,500 kilometers. Here, no one is more than two hours away from a beach-side lounge chair — which explains why everybody knows how to smile and have fun!
